Within the shadow of famed Table Mountain, historic Cape Town has a style all its own at the very tip of South Africa on the Cape Peninsula’s northern end. When time allows, visitors often book ferry passage for day-trips to infamous Robben Island, site of a one-time leper colony and where it’s possible to set foot into the dank, cramped cell where Nelson Mandela -- eventually freed and elected to South Africa’s presidency -- was imprisoned for nearly two decades. Apart from budget and moderate properties, Cape Town’s portfolio of luxury lodging options ranges from the venerable Mount Nelson -- the pale pink icon property known affectionately as the Nellie -- to newer, showier hotels near or connected to the Victoria Mall along the Victoria & Alfred waterfront.
